The paperwork is only the beginning

Flag, class and port-state attendance tests the vessel's visible control: statutory certificates, lifesaving and firefighting appliances, navigation routines, MARPOL controls, rest hours, drills and machinery-space condition.

A vessel that looks prepared on paper can still struggle if officers cannot explain their routines or if corrective action has not been verified. Candour combines document review with walkdowns and crew familiarisation so readiness survives contact with the inspection.

Where to apply pressure first

  • Certificates, crew documents, rest hours and training records.
  • LSA, FFA, navigation, pollution-prevention and engine-room readiness.
  • Deficiency history, PMS evidence and repeat-risk items.
  • Clear briefing for Masters and senior officers before attendance.
